Chicago welcomes migrants arriving from the border

NIJC is working closely with local partners to welcome and support asylum seekers and other immigrants who began arriving in Chicago last week by bus from Texas. Despite the intent by the governor of Texas to create chaos and resentment toward immigrants, the City of Chicago and the network of partners here are responding with compassion to meet people's immediate basic needs, and legal services to ensure due process. Seeking asylum is a legal and human right, and we'll continue to defend it. Read NIJC's statement.

Biden administration winds down Remain in Mexico

We welcomed the news last month that the Biden administration started winding down the cruel Remain in Mexico policy. Recently, NIJC attorney Colleen Kilbride traveled to Laredo, Texas to represent a woman seeking asylum under Remain in Mexico. She witnessed the inhumanity of this program and wrote about her experience. As the Biden administration winds down Remain in Mexico, we urge it to swiftly end Remain in Mexico in its entirety and restore asylum. Read Colleen's blog post about her experience witnessing Remain in Mexico.

What's going on with DACA? See NIJC's DACA FAQs.

The Biden administration released its final regulation on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The final rule keeps the same DACA eligibility requirements that have been in place since the beginning of the program and the government still cannot grant initial DACA requests due to an injunction issued in the Texas v. U.S. lawsuit. We are expecting a ruling from the appeals court any day and the future of DACA is still in danger. See NIJC's updated FAQs about DACA.
