...But the Fight Continues

After decades of inaction and apathy, the US Congress approved the largest climate legislation in US history. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) comes full of investments in climate, clean energy, and environmental justice—and will create nine million good, family-sustaining jobs over the next 10 years.

But as Sierra Club Associate Director of Communication for Latino Media Javier Sierra says,

the IRA also comes loaded with gifts to the dirty energy industry, which will end up disproportionately punishing front-line communities .

Protect Alaska's Bristol Bay

Bristol Bay is home to the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world and provides sustenance for 30 Alaska Native Tribes. It's a huge job creator and economy booster for Alaska—and offers fishing experiences like nowhere else on Earth. Unfortunately, an enormous proposed open-pit copper and gold mine (Pebble Mine) continues to pose a dangerous threat to Bristol Bay’s ecosystems and communities.

We still have a chance to protect Bristol Bay and this national treasure.

Sierra Club Foundation Annual Report

The 2021 Sierra Club Foundation Annual Report showcases the impact of Sierra Club Foundation-funded work over the course of the year, sharing stories of organizers, attorneys, chapters, and partners across the country who are moving our mission forward.

In 2021, we saw major achievements in the fight for climate justice thanks to the relentless, collective advocacy of volunteers, staff, and partners. Working together with frontline communities, Tribes, and local grassroots organizations demonstrates that we can protect nature when we catalyze people to be powerful together.

Ensuring Our National Monuments Acknowledge Our Nation's Legacy of Racial Violence

Our nation has a long history of race riots, massacres, and lynchings. One of the most pivotal took place in 1908 in Springfield, IL, when a white mob attacked and lynched Black people and burned their homes. This galvanized the public and led to the founding of the NAACP.

While stories like this deserve a place in our history books and among our public spaces, we do not have any parks or monuments that tell these important histories.

Now, we're calling on the National Park Service to establish this location as a national monument to preserve its history and provide a memorial to honor riot victims and their descendants.

Ready to Go Solar?

Sierra Club solar energy partner SunPower is dedicated to changing the way our world is powered by making clean energy solutions available across the United States. Since 2005, SunPower's solar installations have generated 133 terawatt-hours (TWh) which is the equivalent of avoiding 94 million metric tons of carbon emissions. The offset CO2 from their products is equivalent to negating greenhouse gas emissions from 104 billion pounds of coal burned or 11 billion gallons of gasoline consumed. In 2021 alone, SunPower enabled 14 million metric tons of CO2e of carbon avoidance for their customers.

When you make the switch to SunPower solar, you'll receive a $1,000 rebate—and SunPower will donate $1,000 to the Sierra Club.
