The Soapbox

The Union’s newsletter for our 59,000+ volunteers

We have resolved to join forces to help preserve our Union, our Republic, and our democracy.

September 7, 2022
THE SOAPBOX seeks to keep you connected to what’s happening at The Union and share news about our work to oppose anti-democratic forces in America.

State of the Union: There are 61 days until Election Day. Just 61 days until the first significant test of our work to defend democracy from the autocratic forces of Donald Trump’s MAGA Republican cult will be revealed. It’s been quite a journey since The Lincoln Project formed our corps of volunteers just over eight months ago. Today all of us, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents can be proud of how we are using our individual talents to push back against the extremists who threaten our democracy.

President Biden’s rallying call last week from the steps of Independence Hall in Philadelphia made the struggle to preserve democracy a patriotic American mission.

America is under attack. There is no time to waste; no time to rest.

Please watch and share this short video about The Union with as many friends and family as possible.

Speak up, speak out, get engaged: Tonight, September 7, our partner organization, Field Team 6, is hosting an information session about their work. Field Team 6 links volunteers with local campaigns and political organizing groups across the country. How you participate is up to you. Tonight, we’ll learn how to get involved, with Field Team 6 staff answering questions.

The Playbook: While recent polling shows gains made by pro-democracy candidates against MAGA cult candidates, we must continue pressing forward. Yes, that is good news, but we are two months away from Election Day and a lot can, and likely will, change. We just can’t give the MAGA cult any opportunity. Here are key messages you can use to support our work to save democracy.
* Biden is distinguishing mainstream Republicans from the MAGA cult that threatens American democracy
* In a break from past midterm voting patterns, persuadable voters are favoring the party in power this year, benefiting Democrat candidates
* A judge’s ruling to appoint a special master to review the government’s classified documents that Trump took home will likely delay, but won’t prevent the former president from being held accountable
* Trump is doubling down on crazy as he amplifies QAon conspiracies about the FBI attacking the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and other outlandish claims
* During the FBI’s August search of Mar-a-Lago, hundreds of highly sensitive secret documents were recovered along with more than 11,000 official records Trump wasn’t entitled to keep

The Pulse: Unlike traditional midterm elections, persuadable voters this year are slightly favoring the Democrats, the party in power. An NBC survey pegs these registered voters as either hard Independents or Democrats/GOP voters who aren't reliable party backers. They are not core Democrats or Republicans.

New priorities for voters are changing November’s outlook: Earlier this summer rising inflation and negative views of Biden’s performance had pundits eyeing a massive Red Wave of Republican wins in November. No more. Threats to democracy, abortion rights, gun violence, and an improving economy has tempered that earlier outlook.

Biden confronts Trump MAGA extremism: President Biden, increasingly concerned that anti-democratic trends are spreading within the Republican Party, spoke forcefully last week from the steps of Independence Hall about the danger our country faces. "Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic," Biden said. "As I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise."

Biden separates mainstream Republicans from Trump cult: Recalling the days when Democrats and Republicans worked together in Congress, President Biden said during a Labor Day speech in Wisconsin, “I’ve been able to work with mainstream Republicans in my whole career.” But drawing a stark contrast to today’s toxic politics he also said, “The extreme MAGA Republicans have chosen to go backwards. Together we can and must choose a different path forward.”

Inside Trump’s 20-month effort to conceal documents at Mar-a-Lago: In an August search of Mar-a-Lago, the FBI discovered and retrieved hundreds of highly classified documents and more than 11,000 other records. That got our attention. But for more than 20 months the National Archives, the FBI, and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) struggled with an evasive former president who concealed documents and apparently lied to dodge compliance with the laws covering presidential records.

New Mar-a-Lago security protocols are in place
Special master ruling questioned: The DOJ has not yet signaled its next steps regarding a judge’s order Monday regarding the appointment of a special master to oversee the review of documents seized at Mar-a-Lago. But several legal scholars are weighing in. One wrote that “this was an unprecedented intervention by a federal district judge into the middle of an ongoing federal criminal and national security investigation."

Lindsey Graham fans the flames of hate: U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham is at it again. This time he may be auditioning to replace Trump as “MAGA-leader-in-chief.” His threat of street riots if Trump is indicted for lying about top-secret documents and concealing them from the FBI is repulsive. It echoes Trump’s December 2020 tweet when he summoned his MAGA mob to attack the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Rather than urging calm, Graham, in trademark fashion, invoked hate and violence.

Election denying secretary of state candidates pose threats to 2024 elections: The never-ending agony of election deniers running for secretary of state throughout the nation leaves voting integrity in great danger as they promise to erect new barriers to voting. Battleground state or not, voting rights are in dire straits across the country.

If they win, election deniers will wreak havoc running future elections ([link removed])
