New UK PM: Liz Truss Sworn In, Prepares to Tackle Economic, Energy Issues
Associated Press: Liz Truss became U.K. prime minister on Tuesday and immediately faced up to the enormous tasks ahead of her: curbing soaring prices, boosting the economy, easing labor unrest and fixing a national health care system burdened by long waiting lists and staff shortages. Truss quickly began appointing senior members of her Cabinet as she tackles an inbox dominated by the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which threatens to push energy bills to unaffordable levels, shuttering businesses and leaving the nation’s poorest people shivering at home this winter ( Associated Press). Forbes: The scheduled 80% increase in the energy price cap on 1 October is a focus of attention across the political and social spectrum, and the consensus is that urgent action is required. Ms Truss is said to be finalizing plans to freeze prices at or close to their current level for a period of three or six months. While this would be a huge relief to millions of households who have been staring down the barrel of unaffordable bills, it will still leave energy costs painfully high ( Forbes).

School’s (Still) Out: Seattle Teachers’ Strike May Delay School Start for 54,000 Children
National Review: The start of the school year for students at Seattle Public Schools may come later than expected after teachers union members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike on Tuesday. Ninety-five percent of union members approved a strike authorization, according to the Seattle Education Association. Seventy-five percent of its 6,000 members voted, the union said. The strike authorization comes after months of failed negotiations between Seattle Public Schools and the teachers union, which is demanding higher pay and that the district maintain certain staffing ratios for special education and multilingual students ( National Review). Washington Examiner: The strike will begin Wednesday morning, the scheduled first day of school, unless the school district and the union reach a collective bargaining agreement prior to then. If an agreement is not reached, classes for the district’s nearly 54,000 students will not begin as planned ( Washington Examiner).

Serious Questions Raised About John Fetterman’s Health After He Backs Out of Debate
Post-Gazette: Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. and U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman has not fully recovered from the serious stroke he suffered in May. His campaign has acknowledged his obvious struggles with “auditory processing” and speech, but the persistence of those struggles has contrasted with the campaign’s rosier predictions of a return to the rigors of campaigning, including debating his opponent, Mehmet Oz. If Mr. Fetterman is not well enough to debate his opponent, that raises serious concerns about his ability to serve as a United States senator ( Post-Gazette). RNC Research: CNN: “Fetterman’s campaign has been tight-lipped on details about the candidate’s recovery so legitimate questions about his health status remain” ( Twitter).

We all know the reason. The company also owes the county $18,443. Combined the company is $42,268 behind in city and county business tax payments for 2020, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit, obtained by National Review, does not indicate exactly why Louis Vuitton has refused to pay its taxes, and the company has not addressed questions from the media… The store’s manager estimated that the rioters caused over $500,000 in damage and stole more than $300,000 worth of items, according to a report in the Oregonian, which first reported on the lawsuit ( National Review). Reporter Ryan Mills: In Portland, luxury retailer Louis Vuitton hasn’t paid $42K in city and county taxes for 2020, the year rioters caused $500K in damages to their store and stole $300K worth of product. California at High Risk of Rolling Blackouts
Daily Caller: California residents are at risk of experiencing blackouts on Tuesday, just four days after President Joe Biden’s Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm praised the state’s green energy policies. Bill Melugin: California’s grid operator has just issued a level 2 energy emergency alert, upgrading from level 1 issued earlier. @California_ISO is now advising Californias to “be ready for potential rotating power outages” this evening as electricity demand may hit all time high ( Twitter).

Arrivederci! Pelosi Eyes Ambassadorship if Democrats Lose House in Midterms
Townhall: The California Democrat wants President Biden to tap her as the next U.S. ambassador to Italy. Italy is the only G-7 country that doesn’t have a U.S. ambassador. One “highly placed Italian source” told Global Insider it’s “simply absurd and self-defeating for Washington” to have no one there ( Townhall). Fox News: So far, 101 Biden ambassador nominees have been confirmed by the Senate, but Biden has been slow to name ambassadors to several countries, including Italy. About a quarter (27%) of the 194 ambassador positions are currently without a Senate-confirmed official.
