Dear John,
“They’re coming after you.”
“Not a single one of us is safe.”
“A shadow army of 87,000 IRS agents.”
This is the new bald-faced lie from the GOP and its billionaire donors — that Democrats are sending the Internal Revenue Service after working-class Americans.
In fact, the exact opposite is true.
The IRS is woefully underfunded, and the Inflation Reduction Act is slated to collect $100 billion over the next decade from ultra-rich tax cheats while speeding up the processing of tax refunds for everyday people.
However, if we don’t act fast, this lie could gain traction with voters, potentially tipping control of Congress to the Republicans.
So we’re fighting back using our tremendous reach on social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram to share videos, graphics, and explainers to spread the truth and inoculate voters against this new Republican Big Lie.
Will you chip in and help support Inequality Media Civic Action as we fight misinformation and tell the truth about wealthy tax cheats?
The richest 1 percent of Americans pay nowhere near their fair share of taxes, regularly hiding about a fifth of their income from the IRS without consequence.
This is no accident. Republicans cut the IRS budget by about 20 percent in the last decade. As a result, just 2 percent of the richest Americans had their taxes audited in 2019, down from 16 percent in 2010.
Now that the Democrats are restoring a little money to the IRS, the super-rich are freaking out.
Billionaire casino magnate and GOP megadonor Steve Wynn wants to blanket the airwaves with lies about whom the IRS will target. Beneficiaries like Sen. Ted Cruz are happy to comply.
But unless we launch a counteroffensive, there’s a very real danger voters will get the wrong message. We can’t let that happen. That’s why we’re doubling down to get the truth out, using our explainer videos and TikToks to tell the real story of how the IRS finally has the wherewithal to make the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.
Inequality Media Civic Action has the proven ability to reach a wide-ranging audience across social media, including key voters, and counter the right wing’s lies. Will you chip and help us tell the truth about wealthy tax cheats?
Thanks for helping us fight to save our democracy,
Robert Reich
