While many U.S. House seats are heavily gerrymandered to favor the incumbent, there are several races that political pundits are keeping a close eye on. And we’re not taking a single one for granted!
That’s why, last week, I held packed endorsement events with three Social Security champions: Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA), and Christy Smith, Democratic candidate for Congress.
Porter and Levin are both running for re-election in purple districts, while Smith is taking on Rep. Mike Garcia (R-CA) in
the most competitive House race in the country.
To protect and expand Social Security, we need all of them to win their races this November!

Rep. Katie Porter is an invaluable leader on expanding Social Security, lowering drug prices, and protecting Medicare from privatization. I was thrilled to endorse Katie, and present her with our Social Security Champion Award.
Katie’s Republican opponent, Scott Baugh, refers to Social Security as an “unfunded liability” and wants to raise the retirement age. We need to make sure that Katie stays in Congress — along with her “whiteboard of justice”!
Rep. Mike Levin is another key Social Security champion. A newspaper once asked Levin why he opposes raising the retirement age for “entitlements”, and he responded:
"I opposed the term entitlement. I think it’s an earned benefit. I think that when I look at my grandparents, my parents, think about how they were able to retire with security, I see Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid as some of the most successful programs in our nation’s history and I think we need to be doing the opposite of raising the age. We need to be strengthening the benefits."1
The best way to protect our earned benefits is for Democrats to EXPAND their House majority this November. That’s why I was thrilled to endorse Christy Smith, whose race FiveThirtyEight ranks as the most competitive in the country.
