FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, September 6, 2022 ‌ Malliotakis Announces October 7 Service Academy Application Deadline, Names Committee Lead (WASHINGTON, DC) - Today, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis announced Thursday, October 7, 2022, is the final submission deadline for Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn students to submit their U.S. Service Academy application forms to her office. As a Member of Congress, Malliotakis is able to nominate high school juniors and seniors from New York's 11th Congressional District to one of our country’s four service academies: Air Force, Army, Merchant Marine, or Navy. Malliotakis may nominate up to ten students for each vacant academy slot allotted to New York's 11th Congressional District. Students who are accepted make a commitment to serve in the U.S. military for at least five years upon graduation. "Nominating impressive students from Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn for our country's service academies is one of the greatest honors I have as a Congresswoman," Malliotakis said. "I urge students to get all application forms into our office before the October 7 deadline so our nomination committee has ample time to review them. I look forward to receiving the committee's recommendations and wish the best of luck to these young patriots who wish to serve our great nation." Additionally, Malliotakis announced that Wagner College Administrator and retired Coast Guard Captain David J. Martin, Esq. will lead her selection committee to review this year's applicants, made up of approximately 20 prominent community leaders, high-ranking active duty and former military members personnel, and military academy graduates. The committee will interview applicants, assess their qualifications, and ultimately make nomination recommendations to Congresswoman Malliotakis. "I look forward to meeting some of our best and brightest young men and women as they apply for one of the federal service academies. About Captain David J. Martin, Esq.: Captain David J. Martin, Esq. currently serves on the Wagner College administration as the Director of Planned Giving and College Relations. While in the active service, he was recognized as one of the premier trial attorneys in the Coast Guard. He prosecuted and defended a multitude of crimes, including; vehicular homicide, theft, sexual assault, rape, robbery, and various military crimes and drug offenses. He left the active service of the Coast Guard in June 2003 when he accepted the position at Wagner College. He remained in the reserve forces and rose to the rank of Captain. He was the last Coast Guard officer to be in command of a Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron (NCWRON 25) and he proudly wears the Navy command at sea pin. His last legal assignment was serving as the Reserve Judge Advocate General for the entire Coast Guard. He was asked to serve as the alternate General Court-Martial Judge in 2013 – the first time a reservist was ever asked to serve as a military judge. He was recognized for his efforts by the American Bar Association in 2015 when he was selected as the Career Military Lawyer of the Year.
