John,
With every bill I introduce and every vote I cast, I’m focused on dismantling the structural racism at the root of so many of our institutions.
The American credit reporting system has discriminated against Black, brown, Indigenous, and low-wealth communities for generations, contributing to the growing racial wealth gap and excluding our communities from opportunity. Until we level the playing field, credit scores will remain a barrier to employment, utilities, insurance, education, and more.
We must remove these barriers. That’s why I passed legislation prohibiting medically necessary debt from showing up on credit reports, and cracked down on the auto insurance industry’s redlining based on credit score and zip code.
But we’re just getting started. We must fundamentally overhaul the American credit reporting system to end blatant discrimination based on race and zip code.

I represent one of the lowest-wealth congressional districts in the country. We are continually left behind and denied the opportunity to thrive. That’s why I ran for Congress―to give our district and our residents a voice and stand up to the greedy corporations and billionaire bullies that deny us opportunity.
Someone’s credit score should not determine whether they can access human rights or basic necessities. We must change our racist credit reporting system so it doesn’t put up more barriers for already-marginalized communities.
One step is holding the private credit reporting agencies accountable for deceiving and taking advantage of people.1

Thank you for being by my side as, together, we fight back against structural racism.
Always serving you,
Rashida
