Returning to school can be an exciting time of year — but we know it can also be an isolating time. GLSEN’s research shows that most LGBTQ+ students (59.1%) reported personally experiencing LGBTQ-related discriminatory policies or practices at school such as being prevented from using bathrooms that align with their gender identity, being prohibited from discussing LGBTQ+ topics in school assignments, or not being allowed to promote their GSA clubs.

Discrimination and stigma have been found to adversely affect the well-being of LGBTQ+ students. Students who reported experiencing discriminatory policies or practices in school had lower levels of self-esteem and higher level of depression.

Teachers and school staff, however, can make a difference—visible adult support can go a long way in decreasing the feelings of isolation that can lead to despair. Educators and parents working together can bring about change using already available resources like GLSEN’s Safe Space Kit.

John, I’m asking you to put vital resources like GLSEN’s Safe Space Kits in reach of those who need them most with a donation today. [[link removed]]

GLSEN is actively updating our evergreen LGBTQ-inclusive classroom resources to empower educators to more confidently engage in LGBTQ-inclusive and supportive practices. With your support, we can make positive change in every school in America.

Together,

* President Biden has been very clear that every student deserves to feel safe and welcome in the classroom. The Department of Education will be monitoring laws like Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill (which prohibit GLSEN’s Safe Space resources). Any student or parent who believes they are experiencing discrimination is encouraged to file a complaint with the Department’s Office for Civil Rights.

GLSEN believes that every student has the right to a safe and inclusive K-12 education.
We are a national network working to make this right a reality.
