The OAC is standing up against childhood obesity bullying. Will you stand with us?
John, All over the country, kids are heading back to class -- but for too many, that means back to the weight-based teasing they face every day in school. As a child, you may have even experienced this treatment firsthand, as having excess weight or obesity is consistently one of the most common reasons cited for bullying among adolescents. The statistics on weight-based harassment are distressing: 24% of boys and 30% of girls experience daily teasing bully and rejection because of their size. That number doubles by the time teens enter high school. September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, which is why we're launching a campaign focused on ending the bullying and peer victimization that children with excess weight experience. The OAC is committed to developing more robust childhood obesity programs and initiatives in the coming year. We'll be engaging parents, teachers, administrators and most importantly, students in crafting our newest strategies. Today, we're asking for your help as we start the work not only to prevent weight-based bullying but to provide hope and healing to those who have already been mistreated.
There are two things you can do immediately to help: - Make a donation. Contributions of all sizes will make a difference as we fight to change society’s negative attitudes about people’s weight. It's time we end the pain and suffering resulting from childhood obesity bullying.
- Share our efforts to End Childhood Obesity Bullying on social media and encourage others to get involved. Let your friends and family know you're supporting OAC's stand against childhood obesity bullying, and tell them why they should join in.
