Dear John

They say the best things in life are free, like…free trade. The UK Trade and Business Commission is testing that hypothesis with its next session exploring potential new free trade agreements between the UK and Canada and the UK and the US.

The session will take place on Thursday 8th September between 3pm and 5pm BST, and you can watch the session live (or the recording later) at the link below:

Since Brexit, the UK Government has been desperate to secure free trade agreements with other global partners - but it hasn’t exactly ticked all the right boxes in its rush to replace the trade deals we lost when we ceased to be an EU member state.

The UK has successfully annoyed the US (and other potential trading partners) over Northern Ireland, with threats to walk back on the NI Protocol causing questions about the UK’s trustworthiness and the potential for renewed division and violence.

To make matters even more tricky, the UK has difficult decisions to take with both the US and Canada about what types of agricultural export from these countries should be permitted - even at the risk of undercutting UK farmers. Tricky decisions with no easy answers.

So, join the Commission and our expert witnesses as we get stuck into the detail of the deals.

Best wishes,

Maheen Behrana
