Top federal worker unions: Biden pay raise good, but not enough
The nation’s two top federal worker unions, the Government Employees (AFGE) and the Treasury Employees (NTEU), call Democratic President Joe Biden’s proposed 4.1% across-the-board raise next year for the nation’s two million federal workers good—but not good enough. Both unions and others support legislation introduced early this calendar year by Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., and Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, for an across-the-board 5.1% hike.
“The 4.6% pay raise by President Biden will represent the largest pay adjustment for federal employees in 20 years,” said AFGE President Dr. Everett Kelley on September 1. “However, in order to bring federal salaries close to market rates and compensate for the recent surge in inflation, more must be done.” Kelley’s 4.6% figure includes 0.5% hikes in “locality pay” for high-cost areas, The locality pay hikes do not cover all federal workers, 85% of whom live and work outside the metropolitan Washington-Baltimore-Virginia area.

Gallup poll: pro-union support highest since 1965

Public support for unions has hit its highest point since 1965, the Gallup Organization’s annual poll says, as respondents approve of unions by a 71%-26% margin, with the rest undecided. That ties the 1965 figure of 71% support, Gallup reported. Then, 19% of the public opposed unions, with the rest undecided. The all-time records in the union support-opposition poll, which started in 1936, were 75%-18% in 1953 and 75%-14% in the first of three surveys in 1957. The rest of the respondents were undecided.
AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler lauded the results, which she said reflect the facts on the ground, in increased enthusiasm and organizing. That’s been especially true among low-wage exploited workers. “After a year of victorious strikes, record union election filings and relentless efforts from corporate billionaires to silence workers, today comes as no surprise. Working people recognize the need for a collective voice—and it shows. We are stronger in a union,” Shuler declared.
