Friends, On Labor Day, we celebrate the hardworking Americans who have built our country. The opportunity to work hard and pursue a better life for your family has always been foundational to our nation. However, Washington Democrats continue to peddle policies that hamper this pursuit, as well as undermine the middle class and hardworking folks across our country. We can see this first in President Joe Biden’s student loan “forgiveness” proposal. Outstanding federal student loan debt currently totals $1.7 trillion and is held primarily by those from higher income households. It is predicted that Biden’s student loan bailout plan could cost taxpayers, in total, between $300-$980 billion. Yet, this tax burden would not be proportionate, as most would be paid by people who either didn’t go to college or have worked hard to pay off their own loans. Your individual share of this burden would amount to an estimated $2,085 in taxes. Biden’s plan is blatantly unfair, legally challenged, and does nothing to address the root causes behind the high cost of education in this country. Furthermore, this plan will likely create greater financial hardship for folks already struggling economically. I’ve heard from Timothy in Mount Gilead who worked hard to pay for both his and his children’s college education and is now being forced to cover the cost of others’ loan payments. I’ve also heard from Judy, who, after working in the Cabarrus County School System for nearly 30 years and persevering through decades of economic hardship, is now concerned that folks struggling to pay their bills will have to pay for Biden’s bailout. It is not fair that you pay for others’ decision to take out student loans, and I will continue to fight to make sure this doesn’t happen. Additionally, I, along with my Republican colleagues, will continue to work to enact actual solutions to address the high cost of education as well as strengthen our economy in the long-term. We must work to stop inflation and lower your cost of living. Inflation continues to sit at a 40-year high, with the cost of goods and services remaining at abysmal levels across the board. According to recent national figures, the price of food at home is up 13.1%, electricity 15.2%, and baby food 15%, to name a few. Despite this, Democrats in Washington have continued to spend recklessly, most recently through their “Inflation Expansion Act,” partisan legislation that will raise taxes, needlessly expand the IRS and federal bureaucracy, and aggravate the inflation crisis. Instead of doubling down on policies that helped create our poor economic condition in the first place, lawmakers in Washington must focus on real solutions for you and your family. This starts by ending needless government spending, lowering taxes, and establishing an economic environment that encourages growth and minimizes costs. From record gas prices, skyrocketing grocery and utility bills, rising crime and fentanyl in our communities fueled by an open southern border, and now a plan to force you to pay others’ debts, the leftist agenda from Biden and Washington Democrats has resulted in an assault on the middle class. Yet this Labor Day, I am focused on ending this assault and championing policies that will strengthen our country. As your congressman, rest assured I will always work to make an economy that rewards hard work and enables you to build a better life for you and your children.
