My dad spent 30 years assembling catalytic converters in Milwaukee.

Let me tell you, he would be the first to say that if you want something built right, build it in Wisconsin, and build it with union labor.

I come from a proud union family. Union jobs gave my family a ticket to the middle class. They opened doors of opportunity for me that a lot of people can only dream of.

It is not an exaggeration to say that my parents' union jobs are the reason why I am a U.S. Senate candidate today. I wouldn't be where I am today without them.

My grandfather worked as a steelworker at A.O. Smith after he came back from World War II. He was so proud of what we built here in Wisconsin.

He raised my dad and me to be proud, too — proud of our state’s legacy of manufacturing and strong unions. That history is what built some of the most successful manufacturing companies in America. And for so many people, those jobs were their pathway to the middle class.

When we talk about creating good jobs in this country, we're talking about jobs that you can raise a family on. Jobs that let you pay down your mortgage, or put some money away to get you through tough times. We need more jobs that let you save up for your kids to go to college, or allow you to take care of your parents when they get sick without worrying about putting food on the table.

That’s what union jobs meant for my family.

But unfortunately, the opportunities that good-paying jobs provided to my family are getting harder and harder to come by. For years, politicians in the legislature and in Congress have been hacking away at workers’ rights and shipping good jobs overseas.

And then you have Ron Johnson who has catered to his wealthy donors and large corporate interests at the expense of working people. It’s what he has been doing since he got to Washington more than a decade ago.

While Ron Johnson has been busy securing tax breaks for his own company and for his millionaire donors, working people in Wisconsin have suffered.

I’m running for U.S. Senate because it's time to send the son of a union family to fight for working-class and middle-class Wisconsinites in Washington. It's time to bring opportunity to every person across our state.

But creating the change we need in this country starts with flipping Wisconsin's Senate seat and defending the Democratic Senate majority.

I cannot win this race without your support. We need to be in this together if we are going to defeat Ron Johnson in November.
