On a nice spring day in 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City caught fire.
The owners and managers escaped, but the sweatshop workers, mainly women, faced an obstacle course of flammable materials, blocked fire escapes, and locked doors. Many took to jumping out of high windows, choosing a quick death over the long one promised by the rising flames.
146 workers perished in the fire, and their deaths sparked public outrage and a demand for workplace protections, setting the stage for the rise of the modern labor movement.
Since then, the power of workers organizing together has brought us the minimum wage, the forty-hour workweek, weekends, mandatory breaks, overtime wages, workers’ compensation, and so much more. Here in California, over 2.7 million workers benefit from employee unions.
Dr. Kermit is proud to stand with working families and their unions. His campaign has been endorsed by the California Labor Federation (AFL-CIO), United Domestic Workers, PORAC (Peace Officers), Sacramento-Sierra’s Building & Construction Trades Council, California State Association of Letter Carriers, Sacramento Central Labor Council, and SEIU California.
Our opponent, Kevin Kiley, has voted against allowing workers to form unions and sponsored legislation aimed at dismantling unions.
Will you stand with working families and help Dr. Kermit FLIP this TOSS UP seat blue in November by volunteering to help us Get Out The Vote?
In solidarity,
Team Kermit
