They’re thinking up new ways to keep workers down You are receiving this email as one of Alexandra’s most engaged followers. Hi John, As we celebrate Labor Day, I wanted to focus on one group that isn’t celebrating: the massive companies that employ so many of us and try to exploit all of us. For us as workers, unions stand for fair wages, safer working conditions, secure pensions and needed training. But for Big Business, unions start for one thing: lowered profits. Because it costs more to pay workers a living wage for an honest day’s work. That’s why we’ve seen major corporations across the country use every dirty trick in the book—plus some that we’re even in the book!—to stop their workers from unionizing. We’ve seen this time and again, from the likes of Amazon, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, even Trader Joe’s has joined in. Here in Philadelphia, workers are standing strong against corporatist bullying. Philly’s public school workers threatened to strike if they couldn’t reach a new deal before the end of last month. And despite the usual hardball anti-union tactics, they fought and won: Less than two weeks ago, the school workers reached a major new agreement that includes historic pay increases, protects health and pension benefits, and ensures paid sick leave and vacation. Philly’s nursing home workers are also fighting back. After being refused reasonable pay and benefits, and in the face of a systemic staffing shortage, 700 healthcare workers from 14 nursing homes went on strike just last Friday. And they’re going to use that strike to make sure that the nursing homes treat their employees fairly. Even Philly’s art museum workers have joined the fight. Less than a week ago, the workers of the Philadelphia Art Museum union voted almost unanimously to authorize a strike. And like our nurses, they’re going to make sure the Philadelphia Art Museum provides for its employees. Our unions are paving the way for how workers across the country can hold their employers accountable. But they need our support to withstand the Union busting tactics that are being thrown their way. I made it through college by making just a few dollars an hour—I know what it’s like to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. When it comes to worker power, I’m all in, and I’m asking you to join me. Today is Labor Day—can you take a stand for workers by supporting my pro-union movement today? Donate Now >> Celebrating America’s workers, Alexandra M.
