Happy Labor Day, john.

My mom was a unionized public school teacher. Growing up, I saw firsthand the crucial role unions play in improving the workplace. With her union, my mom and her coworkers negotiated increased school funding, smaller class sizes, and improved benefits

Because of her teachers union, my mom had a better place to work and her students were given better learning opportunities.

Today, we honor the workers who harnessed the power of collective bargaining to improve working conditions for people all across this country.

It's because of unions that we have the 40-hour work week, no child labor, safe working conditions, overtime pay, Social Security, and anti-discrimination laws. I am so grateful for what the labor movement has accomplished for workers here in Washington State and across the country, but there is still work to be done.

I hope you'll join me today in honoring the accomplishments of the labor movement, and tomorrow, let's get back to fighting alongside them for a better future for all workers.

Thank you,

Kim
