Dear friend,

Fatima Alhaj, 50, fled from Aleppo to Jordan with her four children and her mother in 2016. "I could not live with the shooting, death, war and destruction anymore," she explains. "Leaving everything I had behind; my dreams, my memories, my friends, and entering the unknown was one of the hardest decisions I have made." Thanks to the support of many donors, UN Women was there to help Fatima, and many more women in need like her. Through the UN Women Oasis Centre, Fatima is now teaching some 40 children Arabic and English. The incentive-based volunteer programme is enabling her to provide for her family economically, as well as improving her confidence and self-esteem via regular counselling services accessible through the centre. Christine Banlog has been a market vendor for 22 years. She is now 64, widowed, and raising her three grandchildren in Nyalla, Cameroon. Christine belongs to the Association Camerounaise des Bayam Selam (Association of Market Women or ASBY), a UN Women-supported national network of women who buy goods and produce from wholesale markets and sell them in smaller markets – all made possible thanks to generous donors like you. Since joining the Market Women's Association last year, Christine has started growing her business. The Association has provided her with training on life skills and how to manage her finances better. Read Christine's story » ([link removed])

We have a wish for the New Year: we want every woman and girl to have the right to a life free from violence. We want the young girls of today to grow up in a world where child marriage does not exist, and where women have the right to participate and lead in political institutions. We want women like Fatima and Christine to have the right for decent work and social protection, no matter where they born. And it’s only with your generous support that our wishes can be fulfilled.

What's your wish?
