Today is Labor Day, a day meant to celebrate workers and their contributions to this country.
And we absolutely should.
Our nation runs on the labor of working folks — and they deserve to be recognized. But you know what we really deserve?
And moreover — we seriously need to rethink our entire society so that it doesn't rely on women’s unpaid labor to function.
According to an analysis by Oxfam, if American women received minimum wage pay for their unpaid labor, we would have earned $1.5 trillion in 2019. Women do on average four hours of unpaid labor per day, as opposed to 2.5 hours for men.
From grocery shopping and cooking meals to taking care of children to cleaning the bathroom, women are by and large responsible for all of the little things that make it possible for a household to keep running.
All on top of often working outside the home.
Look, this country does not work for working women — especially for moms. This Labor Day, we’re recommitting to the fight to create a fairer, better future for all workers, paid and unpaid.
