Happy Labor Day, John.

Today, as you spend time with family and friends, I hope you take the time to celebrate the history of labor movements in our city and across the country.

Philly is a proud union town. It’s nothing new. The first-ever general strike in North America took place in Philadelphia. In 1835, at least 20,000 workers struck for better wages and a ten-hour workday. It was a success and laid the foundation for the American labor movement.

Today we recognize the working men and women who put their livelihoods on the line for progress. And we can thank those activists for the minimum wage, 40-hour workweek, benefits, safety standards, and the creation of the middle class.

John, we can learn lessons from the past as we continue building power today. I'm determined to continue fighting to deliver working Americans the rights, protections, and respect they deserve.

In solidarity,

Dwight
