Today is Labor Day – a holiday dedicated to honoring the workers who keep our society running day in and day out. Organized labor and unions built America’s middle class – and I know this firsthand .
I grew up in a working-class family in Lowell. My father was a union ironworker, and my mother was a domestic worker who juggled several part-time jobs while raising my three sisters and I. Thanks to their hard work, we were able to have food on the table and a roof over our heads .

The labor movement drastically improved life for millions of Americans. From mandating workplace safety requirements to the 8 hour work day and weekends to ending child labor, much of what we take for granted today was the result of labor organizers and unions fighting for a better system for all.
But friends, a lot has changed since then . Corporate interests have turned the tide against organized labor and have stripped away much of its hard-fought gains. Union rights have been decimated in states across the country, and workers are suffering for it.
As economic inequality and corporate greed continue making life difficult for working families, now more than ever, we need to fight tooth and nail to protect the right to organize, unionize, and strengthen Massachussett’s middle class – and that’s exactly what I’ll continue to do as your Representative in Congress.
