Happy Labor Day, John,

Today, we’re thinking about collective power. The labor movement harnessed that power to totally transform our nation, build the middle class, and win desperately needed protections for workers — despite often violent and sometimes deadly resistance.

Their accomplishments are truly inspiring. And we mean that quite literally, because tapping into that collective power to accomplish transformative change is what expanding the electorate is all about.

Our political status quo relies on keeping the people who suffer the most voting the least. While the Pennsylvania Republican Party is explicitly raising an “army” to keep it that way, we are out every day in communities across Pennsylvania, empowering the youth, immigrants, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color to tap into their collective power to transform Pennsylvania’s electorate by voting in every election, twice a year.

While the time it takes to see real change from voting is often frustrating, real change from any action is rarely immediate. The first nationwide Labor Day — itself not the beginning of the labor movement by any stretch — was in 1894, 35 years before a single union won a five-day work week. Even today there is much left to accomplish in workers’ rights and protections.

Yet it would be ridiculous to say the labor movement was pointless, just like it would be ridiculous to say voting is pointless with our very democracy and fundamental voting rights on the ballot.

In 2020, the Commonwealth’s Black, brown, and young voters turned out in record numbers, and we’ve already seen huge gains from their efforts. While there is much more to fight for, historic climate investments, $10-20,000 of student debt relief, and the most significant gun legislation in 30 years are all significant wins. This is just the beginning.

With your help, we will expand the electorate in Pennsylvania to not only reflect the Commonwealth's demographically changing population but to also elect candidates who represent the change and policies we all want to see for our future. Thank you for standing with us in this fight.

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in under-represented communities of color and immigrant communities. We will register them to vote, provide education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize people to vote in every election.
