True public safety comes when communities have what they need to thrive: safe and affordable homes, access to quality education, healthcare, reliable transportation, and living-wage, stable jobs.
Instead, our communities are suffering the harms of a criminal legal system that relies almost exclusively, on punitive systems of policing, criminalization, and incarceration, rather than on community empowerment and restorative practices. Immigrant communities also face unjust and unrestrained detention, family separation and deportation.
While we are working at the federal level, we know the fight at the municipal and state levels are just as important to ensure that our communities feel safe and have the freedom to thrive. Last year, Local Progress, CPD’s partner network of progressive municipal elected officials, launched Reform/Transform: A Policing Policy Toolkit, to provide elected officials, policymakers, and organizers with a resource on how to evaluate policing reforms using a set of standardized criteria across jurisdictions. In the months since, we’ve seen that when we’re learning from each other across place, we can win the strongest, most effective policies for justice.
We’re pleased to announce that, working closely with Local Progress members, we’ve released an analysis of policing policies in 12 cities focusing on four key topics: 1) collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), 2) use of force, 3) independent oversight, and 4) excessive investment in policing.
This analysis is a roadmap to transform public safety. We need your help to transform a criminal legal system that perpetuates harm on communities of color and to dismantle the punitive institutions that stand in the way of our communities’ freedom to thrive.
