On this Labor Day, I want to take a moment to thank all the workers who stitch our country together.
As House Democrats, we have centered our agenda around aligning with the labor movement. We have focused on three areas – saving the economy, investing in America and winning the future.
We saved the economy with the American Rescue Plan, which spurred economic growth resulting in the creation of 9 million jobs thanks to President Biden’s leadership. Unemployment has fallen from 6.4% to a low of 3.7%. Wages are rising. Union pensions were saved and millions of hardworking Americans can retire with grace and dignity.
We invested in our country with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. We made a once-in-a-generation investment to modernize our nation’s roads, bridges, airports and ports. These projects will be built by organized labor.
We are laying the groundwork to win the future with the Inflation Reduction Act, which not only will make critical investments in renewable energy to address the climate crisis, but also will allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices for the first time.
All this work is just the beginning. We must pass legislation to ensure that those who want to join a union can do so without interference or intimidation. We must pass legislation to protect working conditions so frontline workers are safe. We must pass legislation to invest in our nation’s education system to ensure that all children can have a quality education. We must pass legislation to ensure that all Americans and corporations pay their fair share.
This is my vision. This is the vision of House Democrats. This is the vision for Americans across the country. This is the American dream: opportunity in every single ZIP code.
Onward,
— Hakeem
