A leader's words matter

Dear Friend,
Bad information ruins lives. It damages people’s health, it promotes hate, and it hurts democracy. That’s why a Prime Minister’s words matter.
Whether it’s false statements about vaccines slowing their uptake, or misleading posts about energy bill rebates giving hope in the cost of living crisis, without accurate information people simply cannot make informed decisions, and the harm caused can be extreme.
When that information comes from someone in a position of power, whose words are amplified by the media, whether or not they get it right really matters.

In the coming days and weeks Liz Truss, your next Prime Minister, will be outlining how she plans to address the cost of living crisis, soaring energy bills, and the war in Ukraine. Her decisions will affect each of us. Like any politician she will be asking for your trust.
You should expect the best from your Prime Minister. But after this summer’s leadership contest, Full Fact is also prepared for their worst.
During the contest we checked claims from all candidates, including live during televised debates. We challenged Liz Truss for making untrue claims, including her statement that she had “always been clear that the travel advice is that British people should not go to Ukraine.”
A leader’s words should stand up to scrutiny. You should be able to trust what your politicians say.
Please give £10 today ([link removed]) to help fact check your new Prime Minister.
Our work begins this week with Prime Minister's Questions, where we'll be live fact checking claims made by Liz Truss and her opponents. And next week I'll be giving evidence to MPs about the need to fix Parliament's broken corrections system, on behalf of more than 30,000 people who signed our petition. It’s work like this that means your new Prime Minister, and all politicians, will not only be accountable for their words, but will find it ever more difficult to make harmful false claims stick.

Liz Truss will be the fifth person to hold the office of Prime Minister of the UK since Full Fact started fact checking. She enters No.10 off the back of an untrustworthy campaign.
Whatever your position on the most pressing issues; cost of living or environment, education or healthcare, taxation or immigration, you and everyone else need the correct information. To get that you need honesty and accuracy at the top of government.
What Full Fact needs is your support - to provide people with that information, to prevent harm, and to push the UK towards a place where dishonesty and inaccuracy find less and less purchase on our screens, in our newspapers, and in the mouth of our new Prime Minister.

Thank you,
Will Moy—Chief Executive
