# [#]I see you.
The social worker helping a veteran find housing in Perry Point.
The nurse practitioner providing primary care to uninsured families at Choptank Community Health System in Denton.
The retired volunteer working with youth as a Talbot Mentor in Easton.
The recent immigrant cleaning hotel rooms in Ocean City after the summer’s last hurrah.
The veterinary technician who comes in for an emergency surgery at Bayside Animal Hospital in Cambridge for a worried family whose new puppy ate something poisonous.
The food services worker keeping the UMES cafeteria hopping and the students’ cravings satisfied in Princess Anne.
The fisheries worker at the Oyster Recovery Partnership in Stevensville contributing every day to our clean Chesapeake Bay goals.
The watermen who rise while we sleep to bait a trotline that will feed us the crabs we pick this weekend.
The servers and cooks at MaGerks — slinging pub fare, refilling beer mugs, and bringing us delicious crab cakes when we just want the convenience of someone else making and bringing us our food.
The heavy equipment operator at Eastern Shore Forest Products in Pocomoke City, the welder at Patriot Steel Fabricator in Church Creek, the pipe fitters at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, the bindery operator at Tidewater Direct in Centreville, and the machinist at Dixon Valve in Chestertown, all working overtime to have extra money for back-to-school clothes for their children.
I see you. And I stand with you. This Labor Day and always. It’s the working families of the First District who are the backbone of our economy — the laborers for whom so much of our lives and livelihoods are dependent on the interconnection between our needs that create this work and this work that satisfies our needs. We are all in this together.
I learned at an early age, at the feet of my father, Dale — a life-long welder and member of the United Autoworkers — that standing up for what you believe in takes courage and that every family’s dignity relies on a good job with meaningful wages and benefits.
While my family couldn’t afford fancy things or vacations while my dad was on strike, I learned an important lifelong lesson: that I should always be a fearless advocate for what I believe. That’s why when I’m in Congress, I will be a fierce voice for workers’ rights — to organize, join a union, and strike; to have affordable, accessible health care; to earn a living wage that is fair and just.
Thank you to the labor movement that gave us a 40-hour work week, occupational safety standards, better wages, and health care, retirement, and worker’s compensation benefits when we are injured on the job. May we never take these hard-won victories for granted. I’m so honored to be endorsed by the AFL-CIO — and today, especially, the United Auto Workers — and I will never stop working for you.
Happy Labor Day!
In solidarity,
Heather
