[ [link removed] ]Welch for Vermont
Hello,
This morning, before heading out to fun festivities with friends and
family, I'm reflecting on how hardworking people fought—and continue to
fight—for days like this and why we can’t take it for granted.
In the face of 12-hour workdays and seven-day workweeks and other
untenable working conditions, workers throughout history have joined
together to stand up for themselves. They put themselves at great risk to
secure safe conditions, fair wages, and well-earned rest on weekends and
holidays like today. Their courage and determination won these benefits
for themselves and future generations.
And today, that fight for fair wages, affordable health care, and a
thriving middle class continues. Today’s corporate giants might look a
little different than in the 1800s, but we need the same courage and
determination to stand up and give all workers the bargaining rights and
voice in the workplace they deserve, so all our families can thrive.
I’m filled with appreciation and respect for American workers and the
unions that represent them. I’ll continue to fight for working people in
Vermont and beyond, and I hope you will too. But today, take your
well-earned holiday—you deserve it!
Thank you and happy Labor Day!
Peter Welch
