John,
This Labor Day, we honor the workers across the country rising up to demand fair pay, benefits, and fair scheduling―and those who came before us who made this moment possible.
From Amazon to Starbucks to Apple to Verizon to Trader Joe’s to REI―and now the first Chipotle restaurant in Lansing, Michigan―workers are organizing their collective power to fight back and unionize.
As billion dollar corporations rake in record profits, those profits have gone right into CEO salaries and payments to shareholders, rather than workers’ rights and wages. In 2021, Starbucks recorded $4.1 billion in profits while its CEO Howard Schultz saw his personal fortune grow by $1 billion during the pandemic. At the same time, Starbucks workers received an average raise of less than $300 last year, bringing their median income to just $12,400.
Now, Starbucks is employing union-busting tactics, including firing union organizers, worker intimidation, and even bribing workers to not join the union.
Due to our rigged economy and tax system, corporations are able to write off these anti-union activities when filing their taxes, such as hiring anti-union consultants, anti-union advertising, so-called “captive audience meetings,” and even violations of the National Labor Relations Act.
I am an original co-sponsor of the No Tax Breaks for Union Busting Act to end this outrageous tax giveaway to greedy, union-busting corporations. Will you add your name and become a grassroots co-sponsor today?
I support workers’ rights and labor unions because we all deserve to feel safe at work, to make a living wage, and to have essential services like healthcare. We all deserve human dignity.
For me, this issue is personal. When my dad joined the United Auto Workers (UAW), he ensured we had health insurance for the first time. I know from experience that strong unions uplift people and their ability to provide for their families. Strong unions mean higher wages, safer working conditions, and dignity for all people who work.
We can’t allow corporations to continue making billions of dollars off the backs of workers, without even paying a living wage or providing other essential needs like healthcare. We must push corporations to stop union-busting and treat their employees with dignity.
This Labor Day, join me in becoming a grassroots co-sponsor of the No Tax Breaks for Union Busting Act to hold greedy, union-busting corporations accountable and fight for working people.
Together, we’re fighting for economic justice and a society where we can all thrive.
In solidarity,
Rashida
