On Labor Day, we celebrate and stand with all workers fighting for a better future and planet.

There is no way to build a greener, more inclusive economy without strong, thriving labor unions.

Here are just a few ways that LCV — with your support — has helped to protect our planet and address the climate crisis by standing in solidarity with workers:

  • We fought to pass the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in Congress. This historic investment in climate action puts our country on the path to slashing carbon pollution, cutting energy costs, and investing in communities of color — all while creating good-paying union jobs. The IRA’s new requirements for prevailing wages, apprenticeship programs, and domestically sourced materials will help create over 9 million good new jobs, bring in previously underrepresented groups, and rebuild the U.S. manufacturing sector.
  • We are members of the BlueGreen Alliance, a national partnership that brings together labor unions and environmental organizations to address the climate crisis in ways that create high-quality jobs and build a clean, thriving, and equitable economy.
  • We fought for strong union protections in the bipartisan infrastructure legislation that Congress passed last year, ensuring that workers across the green energy economy and those improving our infrastructure can keep pace with well-paid union workers.
  • We’ve advocated for Congress to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which enhances workers’ right to organize and collectively bargain in their workplaces. The House of Representatives passed the PRO Act in a vote last spring.
  • We’re encouraging the Biden-Harris administration EPA to finalize a strong rule to protect workers and nearby communities from facilities that use hazardous chemicals, and to engage workers and community members to find solutions to potential problems.
Along with addressing the climate crisis, strengthening labor laws and unions are key to addressing worker safety, income inequality, and wage stagnation in this country. LCV is proud to stand in solidarity with our union partners as they fight for a society where everyone can thrive.

Unions play a crucial role in making our society better for everyone. We’re proud to support the rights of all workers to organize — including our own staff. The LCV Union is a proud member of the Baltimore-Washington News Guild.

I hope you’ll join us in celebrating and giving thanks to our country’s workers — both today and every day.

Onward,

Gene Karpinski
