John,
The labor movement has a deep and rich history here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. John Mitchell, the president of the United Mine Workers of America, came to our area over a century ago and showed it's possible to stand up to the corporate titans who would rather keep workers divided to improve their bottom line. He worked with President Theodore Roosevelt to reach an agreement for Pennsylvanian mine workers to improve working conditions.
Today we honor John Mitchell and all hardworking Americans who have fought to improve the workplace for all. Thanks to their efforts, we have the 40-hour work week, breaks at work, paid vacation, sick leave, Social Security, and so much more.
I'm grateful for all that the labor movement has accomplished for workers, but there is still more work to be done. As your congressman, I will always fight for the workers of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Today, please join me in honoring the sacrifices and accomplishments of those workers who came before us.
Thank you,
Matt
