Why We’re Calling for Impeachment

"We now have overwhelming evidence that President Trump pressured a foreign government to interfere in our 2020 elections for his personal benefit and obstructed attempts to bring him to justice," Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune writes. "With so much at stake, we are joining millions of Americans to call for Donald Trump to be held accountable for the harm he’s inflicted on our country, on our democracy, and on the rule of law."

Around the world, women play a crucial role in the fight against climate change and other forms of environmental harm. In 2019, the Sierra Club worked with women leaders to grow feminist solutions to our most pressing environmental issues.

A Good Year in Court

One of the Sierra Club’s most powerful tools for protecting people and the planet is the rule of law. When the Trump administration or a corporate polluter comes after the air we breathe, the water we drink, our public lands, or our climate, we challenge them in court. In 2019, our Environmental Law Program won significant victories in the fight to advance a clean energy future and stop dirty energy projects that threaten progress on climate change.

Clean Energy Triple Play in L.A.

The Sierra Club’s Climate Parents program and its allies scored a major victory on December 3 when the Los Angeles Unified School District passed a resolution committing to get 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and electrify all its buildings and school buses by 2040. The nation’s second-largest public school district is L.A. County’s single biggest energy consumer. The push to go all in on clean energy was led by students, parents, and teachers.

Sorry Spectacle in the Borderlands

The US detained 70,000 children this year, more than any other country, and now the Trump administration hopes to house immigrant families with small children in a military base infamous for toxic spills and caching chemical poisons. Meanwhile, contracts awarded for border wall construction are raising eyebrows in Congress, and leaked emails reveal that Trump senior advisor Stephen Miller, architect of the “zero tolerance” policy that separates children from their parents, has been promoting white nationalist websites.

The Curious Case of the Rabbit Mountain Elk

Colorado’s open-space movement began in Boulder in 1967 with the goal of protecting the area’s redrock vistas, old ranches, and untrammeled grasslands. Boulder County has steadily amassed 66,000 undeveloped acres that it manages as an open-space preserve. In keeping with Boulder’s left-leaning politics, hunting isn’t allowed in the preserve. But development fueled by a booming population has brought urban sensitivities into closer proximity with rural sensibilities.

Massive Development Threatens Protected Wetlands

Fisherman Tengku Azam spent his childhood learning about the marine life that swirled around the mangroves and palms in a coastal lagoon scarcely a mile from his home in Malaysia. When Tengku retired at nearly 70, he set up a school to educate local children about their fishing heritage, and he convinced local authorities to formally protect the lagoon as Setiu Wetlands State Park.

The Town That Beat Back Fracking

Normally, township meetings in Grant Township, Pennsylvania, are lightly attended, quiet, and noncontroversial affairs. But on the hot spring night of June 3, 2014, the meeting room was packed. Every seat was filled, and people were lined up along the back wall and spilling out the entrance into the parking lot. Looking back, many residents believe that was the day their fight against the state's powerful fracking industry began.

That's when the battle lines were drawn.

Goldman Sachs Announces It Will Stop Financing Arctic Oil

On Monday, Goldman Sachs announced that it will not finance new oil drilling or exploration projects in the Arctic, making it the first major US bank to make such a commitment. This important victory was the result of years of sustained pressure from the Gwich’in Nation—the Indigenous people who have relied on Arctic ecosystems for their livelihoods for centuries—and allies from the Sierra Club and Rainforest Action Network.
