Friend, I’ve got good news and bad news about our work to save grizzly bears.

First, the bad news: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved a plan to build new roads and facilitate new logging that would damage important grizzly habitat in Montana. The plan could reverse our progress in restoring grizzly populations.

But here’s the good news: Thanks to funding from our supporters, we’re suing to stop this plan.

Our lawsuits have successfully protected grizzly bears many times over, including a huge victory in 2020 that reinstated Endangered Species Act protections for the Yellowstone region’s grizzly bear population and halted state hunting plans for this magnificent species.
 
But protecting grizzly bears requires a long-term commitment. The same government agency that attempted to remove federal protections from Yellowstone grizzlies is now approving new developments in grizzly habitat in northern Montana.

We’re taking action against this new threat.

My colleague Benjamin Scrimshaw explained exactly why:

“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service again brushed under the rug serious threats to Endangered Species Act-protected grizzly bears and bull trout, paving the way for a new wave of road construction and logging projects in the Flathead National Forest. Roads displace grizzly bears and harm bull trout by delivering damaging sediment to their streams.”
