ANDREW IN THE NEWS Vietnam veterans honored " When Vietnam veterans returned home over four decades ago, instead of being honored, many of them were shunned and mistreated for their service. While nothing can make up for the scars gained by these veterans, both abroad and back at home, local officials recently held a pinning ceremony to honor local Vietnam veterans and their families. In 2012, a national 50th anniversary commemoration was authorized by Congress and established under the Department of Defense to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families. The program concludes on Veterans Day 2025. Vietnam veterans are presented with a lapel pin as a lasting memento of the nation’s thanks ...Congressman Andrew Garbarino explained the details of the pin the veterans received. “The pin is embossed with a bald eagle, which symbolizes the courage, honor, and dedication to service, embodied by our veterans,” Garbarino said. “The blue border and stripes represent our flag and signify vigilance, perseverance, and justice. The wreath along the border represents victory, integrity, and strength. The six stars beside the eagle represent the United States and our five allies who served alongside one another: Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea and Thailand. The message engraved on the back reads, ‘A grateful nation thanks and honors you.’ " Read the full article here. WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02 Andrew Urges Long Islanders To Prep for Hurricane Season It's hurricane season and Andrew wants to make sure you and your family are prepared for any storms this fall. A few helpful tips include:  Write down emergency phone numbers and keep them on the refrigerator or near every phone in your house. Program them into your cell phone too. Gather emergency supplies and prepare an emergency supply kit. Locate the nearest shelter and different routes you can take to get there from your home. Learn more preparedness tips here. CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Moving a Soldier Forward A constituent recently graduated from West Point and relocated for Army service and his mover expenses were meant to be reimbursed by the U.S. Army. However, the constituent utilized a civilian moving company for the move and the company failed to provide the appropriate information for reimbursement and then became unresponsive. Our office became involved and after a series of follow up phone calls and emails, the moving company provided the agreed upon information for Army reimbursment. Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need for the federal government. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Raises Concerns Over Potential Iran Deal Andrew led a group of 50 of his bipartisan colleauges in calling on President Biden to share with Congress any potential agreement with Iran to return to the 2015 nuclear deal in advance due to broad concern among both Democrats and Republicans that provisions reportedly included in the agreement could lead to weakening U.S. sanctions on Iran that are meant to target funding for terrorist activities. “The aforementioned reported provision creates a troubling precedent,” the lawmakers wrote. “We are concerned that it could significantly dilute the effectiveness of terrorism-related sanctions on the IRGC, Iran’s paramilitary terror arm and provides the organization with a pathway for sanctions evasion.” Read more here.
