Hi John,
This week, impeachment is the biggest news.
But first I’d like to talk about white power. Specifically, the white power hand signals that Army and Navy cadets flashed at the annual Army-Navy game this weekend.
They did it on camera.
They did it multiple times.
They were brazen.
Sadly, this kind of outright white supremacy has become a normal, everyday event in America today, thanks to people like Donald Trump and Stephen Miller.
To think that it’s now being openly displayed by cadets at West Point — where my grandfather graduated on D-Day — is disgusting.
At the same time, it’s clear this didn’t come out of nowhere. The white supremacy on display in public life today is just the latest in centuries of racism in America.
And so too is Donald Trump’s brazen corruption. He gets away with what he does because of a longstanding moral rot at the heart of our democracy. Politicians sell themselves to the highest bidder. Billionaires buy elections. Corrupt governors steal elections and suppress minority votes.
Trump gets away with it because our entire system is built to benefit people like him: obscenely wealthy, obscenely greedy, obscenely grifting con men who get richer and richer while the poor get poorer and poorer. The system is morally bankrupt.
Which brings me to impeachment. I think it’s right that the Democrats are impeaching Trump for his abuse of power regarding Ukraine.
But they should have impeached him long ago. And for much more than Ukraine. Where to start?
Using the office of the presidency to enrich himself and his family…
Ripping children away from their families and letting them die in cages, alone, scared, and hungry…
Using campaign funds to hush a mistress…
Threatening political opponents…
So, yes, Trump should be impeached for his Ukraine scheme.
But he should have been impeached a long time ago, too.
Because every single Member of Congress takes the same oath that my grandfather took at West Point: to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
We need Democrats in office who take that oath seriously. Who do as it commands, whether it’s politically convenient or not. Whether Democratic leadership gives permission or not.
Because the Constitution is what binds us together as Americans.
As the representative for Washington’s 6th Congressional District, I will always take that oath seriously. My grandfather taught me to.
-Rebecca
P.S. Until we pass comprehensive election reform, the only way to win office — to take that oath — is to raise money. It’s half of what I do as a candidate.
If, God forbid, we ever have another president as corrupt as Trump, we need politicians who aren’t just empty suits, but who will follow through on what they say. Help elect me to Congress, where I will always follow through:
