Black protestor, holding a megaphone, appears behind big block text: #ProtectBlackDissentDear Friend,

After thousands of advocates like you sent tweets, made phone calls, and signed petitions demanding action from Congress, the Committee on Homeland Security just sent a letter to the FBI requesting a briefing and further information related to their made-up "Black Identity Extremists" classification.

This is a huge win for the #ProtectBlackDissent campaign, which has been pushing for these specific actions since July, when a delegation of Black activists met face-to-face with Congress, including the office of Rep. Bennie Thompson — Chair of the Committee on Homeland Security — to deliver a petition signed by over 100,000 people. In September of this year the campaign also sent a coalition letter reiterating demands for transparency and a Congressional hearing, after leaked documents obtained by The Young Turks revealed that the FBI had previously misled Congress about their use of BIE and other designations targeting Black activists.

You can read and share our statement on today's letter here, but we just wanted to thank you for being a part of this campaign. Because of your efforts we will continue to expose the FBI's surveillance of Black activists in this digital age. Stay tuned for further updates from our #ProtectBlackDissent campaign in the new year!
