Intense rain events cannot fix a drought. Instead, these weather patterns only ruin whole crops of agricultural products, bring dangerous flash flooding, and cause life-threatening landslides.

John,

Extreme heat in historically rainy cities. Torrential downpour in dry, arid regions. This “weather whiplash” is the new reality for many in America — and it’s having absolutely devastating consequences.

While heavy rainfall in drought stricken areas might seem like a solution to our water scarcity problems, unfortunately climate scientists have made it clear: Intense rain events cannot fix a drought. Instead, these weather patterns only ruin whole crops of agricultural products, bring dangerous flash flooding, and cause life-threatening landslides. The same goes for sudden dryness in typically cool or damp climates — turn-of-a-dime changes are not solutions for long-term climate issues, just more chaos for working Americans.

The culprit? Climate change.

Rising temperatures have precipitated a rapid increase of moisture in the air which has created more unstable weather patterns where the weather events themselves are also more extreme. What would have been a day of flooding is now a weeks-long event that makes roads undrivable and certain buildings uninhabitable. What would have been a month of drought is now a month of wildfires.

This is an unsustainable pattern of weather for Americans. Not only is it deeply disruptive to our national and local economies, there is a significant human cost for extreme weather. Earlier this summer in Kentucky, the lives of 38 people were taken by an extreme flood.

SEEC members have been working hard to pass a historic slate of climate change bills that address every single aspect of this pressing crisis — and they’ve succeeded. They know that lowering emissions and slowing the rate the global temperature is rising will save lives.

And now, they need your backing to continue their work. These midterms are going to be a referendum on all the accomplishments of this Congress, including the landmark climate change legislation that has passed. Will you act now and support SEEC members in their fight to push our green agenda forward?
