John, did you catch President Biden’s speech on Thursday?
His message was clear: Our democracy is under attack.
We couldn’t agree more. You and I have watched in horror as, after losing the 2020 presidential election, former President Trump whipped up a vocal minority of his most extreme supporters to paint a target on a core pillar of our democracy: free and fair elections.
Since then, our country has seen threats of political violence against poll workers, extremists in office who want to throw out legitimate votes, and even a deadly and violent attack on our Capitol on January 6 last year.
But, importantly, President Biden also reminded all of us that we have a choice to do something about it.
Common Cause — fuelled by an incredible community of donors and volunteers like you — has been working tirelessly for voting rights and a stronger democracy. We were at the forefront of the campaign to pass the Freedom to Vote Act earlier this year — and when Senate Republicans filibustered it after the House passed it, we kept the fight alive for state-level voting rights legislation.
Across the country we’re pushing for expanded access to the ballot box, creating fair and representative district maps, and even taking bad actors to court when they try to abuse their political power to rig our democracy in their favor.
John, we cannot be bystanders in this ongoing attack on democracy.
Now, we’re building up for our biggest fight of the year — protecting voters in this year’s midterm elections.
It won’t be easy — extremists at every level of government have shown how far they’ll go to silence voters who threaten their power. But it’s important work, and if we want to make progress on any other important issue facing us, we need to act right now to protect our democracy.
Common Cause is already hard at work training poll monitors, matching volunteers to polling places that need our help, and countering election lies online with our social media monitoring program.
I know with your help, we’ll be able to ensure every eligible voter can cast a ballot free from intimidation. But I want to make sure our program can go even bigger — and that our volunteers can help as many at-risk voters as possible.
John, can we count on you to take an active role in the fight for our democracy? Your contribution of $3 today will fuel our nonpartisan Election Protection campaign through November and make sure voters across the country can make their voices heard.
We are at a turning point in this country — and the threat to our democracy has never been more urgent. We must — and we will — overcome this threat so we can make this country a place that is truly of liberty and justice for all. I hope you’ll join us today.
Thanks for all you do,
Karen Hobert Flynn, President,
and the team at Common Cause
