Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Everyone deserves to live in safe, healthy homes. But in Atlanta and across the U.S., communities face evictions as neighborhoods gentrify and home prices rise. And many renters live in unsafe housing conditions because landlords refuse to address them. To help people advocate for their right to suitable housing, AFSC’s Economic Justice Program in Atlanta published the "How to Defend Your Home" manual. Read more from AFSC’s Foluke Nunn and Tim Franzen. [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Tell Congress: It’s time to reverse post-9/11 policies: [link removed] In the aftermath of 9/11, the United States enacted policies that made our communities less safe. That includes further militarizing our foreign policy, local police departments, and immigration system. As we approach the 21st anniversary of 9/11, we must urge Congress to undo these harmful policies—and invest in true community safety instead!
Fresno community members urge senator to oppose Farm Workforce Modernization Act: [link removed] Congress is considering a bill that could create a pathway to citizenship for some farmworkers—but fails to provide genuine protections for all farmworkers. The bill could also put some farmworkers at higher risk for exploitation by employers. “We urge Senator Padilla to oppose this act and more than anything, to listen to us,” says AFSC’s Myrna Martinez Nateras. (Fresno Bee). Read more about the bill. [link removed]
Register for this month’s No Way to Treat a Child webinar (Sept. 13, 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT): [link removed] Last month, Israeli attacks on Gaza killed dozens of people, including 17 Palestinian children. Less than two weeks later, Israeli soldiers shut down six Palestinian human rights groups. In this month’s webinar, we’ll discuss how you can advocate for the rights of Palestinian children and the organizations working to defend them.
Honoring labor leader Walter Reuther: [link removed] This Labor Day weekend, we revisit this 2016 piece by AFSC's Rick Wilson on the work of one major figure in the U.S. labor movement. Walter Reuther was the head of the United Auto Workers as well as an advocate for peace, civil rights, and the environment. [link removed]
