These suggestions can help you make the most of your break so you can return to your classroom rested and re-energized to continue the vital work of educating for a diverse democracy.

Teaching Tolerance Staff Picks: What We’re Reading

It’s a great time to take inventory of your classroom or school library and to ask for books as last-second gifts (if you’re asking). Several new titles stood out to us this year for their thoughtful portraits of diversity and justice. Consider these TT-endorsed books for your students—and for yourself.

Check Out What We’re Reading

“At PACE — where last school year 87% of students were black and Hispanic — rally-goers shared stories of decrepit gym conditions, with broken lockers and showers, as well as a gym floor in poor condition. They contrasted what they have with the gleaming new sports facilities at Beacon high school, which is nearly half white.” — Chalkbeat

“Taking pronouns seriously signals that you’ve thought about what trans and gender-nonconforming people face. That doesn’t automatically make you an ally … But it does mean you’re at least trying to demonstrate basic respect.” — The Washington Post

“Many black youths are often fighting for their lives in a system actively working against them, which can be exhausting and feel like a pointless, uphill battle.” — The New York Times
