Block 6th

On the occasion of the International Vulture Awareness Day, we are thrilled to publish our new report on the latest vulture population estimates across Europe and adjacent Mediterranean countries. The report also assesses the conservation status of vulture species and provides recommendations to help ensure their recovery.

HIGHLIGHTS

Generally positive news
In most European regions, vulture populations showed positive dynamics. However, the recovery of the Egyptian Vulture seems to have recently stalled in several countries.

European vulture species are now five

We have included the Rüppell's Vulture as the fifth European vulture species in this report. This Critically Endangered species faces dramatic population declines in Africa, while its range is expanding in Southern Europe.

Several threats still prevalent
Even though vulture numbers are growing across many European regions, they still face several threats, making their populations vulnerable. Continued monitoring and implementation of conservation actions are crucial to the long-term recovery of European vultures.

Need to improve monitoring in some countries
It is necessary to improve vulture monitoring and conservation actions in certain Mediterranean countries that host important breeding populations of vultures.
