[1]Real Justice
John, first of
all THANK YOU to everyone who supported our actions last month and made
generous donations toward our end of month goals. It’s your efforts that
power our work to elect DAs who hold police accountable, free innocent
people, and defend civil rights.
Now, we wanted to take a moment to highlight some recent wins for our
movement to start off your holiday weekend on the right foot.
In Cook County, which includes Chicago, Real Justice DA Kim Foxx announced
that her office exonerated 8 people from murder convictions.
All of these cases were connected to a corrupt and disgraced Chicago
Police Detective, Reynaldo Guevara. In fact, DOZENS of his cases have been
thrown out, including one that put an innocent man in prison for 30
YEARS.
He has been accused of manipulating investigations and framing victims —
ruining lives — but now these wrongfully convicted people will go free
because Kim Foxx did the work to right his wrongs.
Across the country in Shelby County, Tennessee, which includes Memphis,
Steve Mulroy who we helped elect last month, was sworn in as the District
Attorney.
So many doubted Steve’s campaign, one that stood on a progressive
foundation of civil rights, accountability, and restorative justice. They
said he could never win.
But not only did he win, he won by over 16,000 votes.
At his swearing in, Mulroy addressed the crowd of over 200 people.
“Prosecutors’ only clients are the people,” he said. “There’s only one
obligation — justice. And that means specifically disclosing evidence of
innocence, even if it means risking losing your case.”
He’s ready to work with the community, not against it, to build a system
that brings about real justice in Memphis.
We know we send a lot of emails about prosecutors under attack — and
that’s because the effectiveness of our DAs has been getting the attention
of conservative mega-donors and police unions. Our DAs have never been
more highly scrutinized and targeted, but that doesn’t mean we are
losing.
Kim Foxx, Steve Mulroy, and so many more show us that this movement is
winning all over the country.
Hope you have a great weekend,
Real Justice
