Did you see Mayor Lightfoot's email yesterday? Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is bussing asylum-seekers to Chicago to make a point about illegal immigration in his state. As Mayor Lightfoot said, Abbott is using human beings to peddle an anti-immigrant agenda. It’s racist, plain and simple.
----Begin forwarded message---- Hi, it’s Lori Lightfoot, your Chicago mayor. Did you see this headline in today’s news? Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has designed a program to bus asylum-seekers to northern cities, including Chicago, to make a point about illegal immigration in his state. Look, Chicago is a welcoming city. We welcome hundreds of migrants every year, and I’m working hard to find shelter and other services for the estimated 60 asylum-seekers transported to Chicago. Unfortunately, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is without any shame or humanity. Since he put these racist expulsion practices in place, we’ve been working with our community partners to ready the city to welcome these migrants. Here’s the bottom line: Greg Abbott is using human beings to peddle his anti-immigrant agenda. And yes, I’ll say it, his policy is racist. If you agree that Chicago should be a city that welcomes all, regardless of race or ethnicity, I need you with me. So today, I’m not asking for money, just your support. Will you add your name to our petition condemning Abbott’s hateful policy? This is a critical moment for our city. I don’t appreciate Gov. Abbott’s discriminatory practices, but I’m not going to turn migrants away when we have the resources to welcome them with open arms. I hope you’ll join me in welcoming them. Thanks for your support, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot P.S. My campaign kicked off its signature collection effort to qualify for the Chicago ballot yesterday, and we need your help to reach our goal. Can you chip in $20 or more to help ensure my spot on the ballot in 2023?
