In August, California laws meant to prevent rent hikes are permitting rental increases as high as 10%. Why? Because those laws use inflation to calculate maximum allowable increases–and inflation is the highest it's been in decades.

 

California is in a housing crisis and we can’t afford to keep quiet.

While corporate landlords and investors are making record profits, the average person cannot afford a two-bedroom apartment in any county in California! Even before COVID-19 and record-high inflation, over one-third of California renters, disproportionately people of color –  were already rent-burdened. This means they’ve been paying well over 30% of their total income in rent.
