Can you believe it, John? Mitch McConnell implied that Republican “candidate quality” doesn’t have much to do with Republican U.S. House wins. Could that be because in states where Republicans have succeeded in gerrymandering, anyone with an (R) after their name is likely to win their House race?
Let’s take a look at Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis forced through one of the nation’s worst gerrymanders. Politico reports that Desantis’ gerrymandering “push all but guarantees Florida’s congressional delegation will be more Republican-leaning for years.” Among those likely heading to Congress? An extremist who bragged about selling tear gas that was used against Black Lives Matters demonstrators.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that redistricting isn’t over. Lawsuits are continuing in Florida as well as states like Ohio, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas. The NDRC will continue fighting for fair maps – but this is no longer a once-per-decade fight. We need your help BOTH to push back against GOP gerrymandering AND to do the rest of our work to help elect pro-democracy candidates, protect voting rights, and defend election infrastructure.
