Dear Michigander,?

As we step into September, we are working hard to keep Michiganders safe and put money back in their pockets. We?ve started more roads projects this week, ensuring people stay safe on their way to work or while dropping off their kids at school. We?ve launched a new program to crack down on crime, and we?ve secured a major investment that will bring the semiconductor supply chain and more good-paying jobs to Michigan. As we all transition into fall sweaters and packing school lunches, I will stay focused on making Michigan an even better place to work, get a home, and raise a family.?

Sincerely,

Governor Whitmer

Gretchen Whitmer
Governor of Michigan

Road Projects This Week

This week, a US-127 Business Route resurfacing project [ [link removed] ] began in Isabella County. This investment is yet another step in our work moving dirt and fixing the damn roads. We are saving drivers time and money, helping Michiganders get to work, run errands, and explore our beautiful state safety.

We also completed construction of the I-196 ramp in Van Buren county. This repaving project is just the latest in our? efforts to fix roads and bridges with the right mix and materials at a record pace.

Since I took office through the end of 2022, we will have invested 70% more in our roads than the previous four years to fix over 16,000 lane miles of road and 1,200 bridges, supporting nearly 89,000 jobs. Both my Rebuilding Michigan Plan and the bipartisan Building Michigan Together Plan are helping us build safe, reliable infrastructure that makes a difference for families and small business across the state. ?

I?m proud of what we?ve accomplished ? so let?s roll up our sleeves and keep getting things done.?

Bringing the Supply Chain and Jobs to Michigan
Video of SK Siltron announcement [ [link removed] ]

Yesterday, I joined business, state, and local officials to celebrate the ribbon cutting of semiconductor wafer manufacturer SK Siltron?s new facility in Bay City. Michigan was selected for this $300 million investment over several other states ? making it a huge win for Michiganders. This facility will bring supply chains home, reduce shortages and delay, and build on Michigan?s leadership role in the high-tech semiconductor supply chain. ?

SK Siltron?s commitment to Michigan will help create good-paying jobs for Michiganders in Bay City. The products SK Siltron manufacturers are the building blocks of countless products and industries: electric vehicles, solar panels, smartphones, and so much more. I am so proud Michigan was selected for this investment. It speaks volumes to our skilled workforce, growing economy, and strong business-friendly environment. I will continue to work with anyone to keep bringing supply chains home, build on our high-tech manufacturing leadership, and create opportunity for Michiganders in every region.?

Cracking Down on Gun Crime

As a former prosecutor, public safety is a top priority for me. Michiganders deserve to feel safe as they go to work, drop their kids off at school, or run errands in their neighborhoods. While the annual crime report showed that ? thanks to our work ? crime is flat in Michigan, there is more work to do. ?

That?s why we launched a project called Operation Safe Neighborhood, aimed at reducing gun violence by getting illegal guns off the street and out of the hands of people who cannot legally be in possession of a gun due to prior criminal history. Nearly one in three reported violent crimes in Michigan involve a firearm, and in the first half of 2022, over 450 Michiganders have lost their lives due to gun violence. This new initiative builds on the MI Safe Communities program that I launched last summer to invest in local police, get illegal guns off the street, and fund expanded opportunities in jobs, education, and the justice system. ?

Student Loan Forgiveness for Michiganders

Last week, President Biden announced a?student loan forgiveness program, [ [link removed] ] and Michiganders across the state are set to?benefit greatly from this initiative. In addition to the $10,000 in forgiveness for those earning less than $125,000 and $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients, there are various other benefits Michiganders should be aware of.?

This recent announcement on student debt will save around 1.4 million Michiganders money, keeping dollars in their pockets that they can use to buy a home, get married, or start a family. On top of the $10,000 in forgiveness for eligible Michiganders, there is an extension of the pause on repayment for all borrowers, a new income-based repayment plan cutting monthly bills in half, and more funds for Pell Grant recipients.?

Since taking office I have worked across the aisle to make college more affordable by expanding tuition-free higher education and skills training for Michiganders over 25, future educators, and talented young students pursuing a degree at public Michigan universities. I will work with anyone to keep lowering the cost of higher education and offering more paths for Michiganders to earn a higher education tuition-free, without going into debt in the first place.?
