The present and future of our movement

Hi Friend,

What better time than heading into a holiday weekend to spring two major new No Labels developments on the world?

In a just-published New York Times column, David Brooks lays out the major effort we are undertaking with citizens around the nation to ensure that America has a great choice for the White House in 2024.

And we have a freshly redesigned website to promote our work and build our shared movement together.

First, David Brooks’ piece, which is all about No Labels.

Please read it in full to get the lowdown on the insurance policy infrastructure we are building to protect against the nightmare scenario where the two major parties give their presidential nominations in 2024 to broadly unpopular and divisive candidates.

If Americans demand a real third White House option to bring the nation together, No Labels will be the ONLY entity that can make that happen.

Please share the Brooks column with all your contacts, so folks can read all about it and join our organization to help make sure America can have that third choice if it is needed.

For more on our citizen-driven plan, please watch my colleague Ryan Clancy explain what we are doing (and what we are NOT doing) here.

And watch Ryan’s conversation with some of your fellow citizen leaders who are serving as state co-chairs of this effort from all over the nation:

And when you finish with all of that (!), check out the reimagined No Labels website, the first iteration of our new look, new content, and new ways to get involved.

That is a lot to throw your way around Labor Day, but, hey, we’ve got a lot going on here!

Enjoy the holiday weekend, and get ready to head into fall – and into 2023 and 2024 –  united together to get this done.

Five Facts on the Cost of College in America
By No Labels

There is plenty of disagreement about the fairness and the legality of President Biden’s recent decision to cancel some college student debt for millions of borrowers. But most on both sides of the debate would agree the cost of college is out of control. Unfortunately, Democrats and Republicans don’t appear close to finding a solution. Here are five facts on college costs and student loan debt in America.

More Than 40% of Americans Think Civil War Likely Within a Decade
By Martin Pengelly

More than two-fifths of Americans believe civil war is at least somewhat likely in the next 10 years, according to a new survey – a figure that increases to more than half among self-identified “strong Republicans”. Attendees hold Ruger revolver pistols during the NRA annual meeting in Houston, Texas, in May. US political violence is surging, but talk of a civil war is exaggerated – isn’t it? Read more Amid heated rhetoric from supporters of Donald Trump, the findings, in research by YouGov and the Economist, follow similar results in other polls.

Workhorses, Not Show Horses: Five Ways To Promote Effective Lawmaking in Congress
By Craig Volden & Alan E. Wiseman

We have spent more than a decade exploring the thousands of bills and hundreds of laws produced by members of Congress each year. We find that individual representatives and senators vary dramatically in how interested they are in lawmaking and how effectively they advance their proposals. And we see opportunities to build a better Congress.

50 Bipartisan House Members Raise Concerns About Proposed Nuclear Agreement With Iran
By Laura Kelly

A group of 50 House Democrats and Republicans is calling on President Biden to share with Congress text of a potential agreement with Iran to return to the 2015 nuclear deal before any papers are signed. In a letter sent Thursday and led by Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), lawmakers raise concerns that provisions reportedly included in the agreement could lead to weakening U.S. sanctions on Iran that are meant to target funding for terrorist activities.

By Tom Carlson

History shows that while the IRA was a Democratic initiative, it builds on Republican-backed laws that have brought economic development to all 50 states. We will need bipartisan leadership going forward to advance effective solutions to climate change.

By Erik Katz

A bipartisan pair of lawmakers is looking to create a new prohibition of stock trading for the top civil servants in government, saying it would avoid conflicts of interest and unfair advantages.
