John,
Privacy rights are civil rights, which are crucial to a functioning democracy.
But for too long, we’ve had no federal law to stop Big Tech and other
companies from using our personal data to discriminate. Data-driven
discrimination and deceptive business models have hurt civil rights,
equal opportunity, and our democracy.
We now have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ensure our data is protected online with the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA) – can you write your Representative in support today?
The ADPPA would establish nationwide rules to protect our data
privacy and security. The bill recently passed out of a key committee
with overwhelming bipartisan support, representing our best chance in
years to pass national data privacy protections.
Over 50% of voters want to see a federal privacy law, and over 80% of voters support major provisions in the ADPPA.
If we pass this bill, consumers will have far more control over how
our data is collected, used, and shared. It has strong data minimization
requirements that would prevent companies from collecting personal data
beyond what’s necessary to perform a service, and individual rights
provisions to let consumers access, correct, and delete data that’s
collected about them.
The bill also includes strong civil rights protections that would
prohibit companies from processing data in discriminatory ways –
especially important because privacy and data abuses disproportionately
impact people of color and marginalized communities, preventing them from
accessing economic opportunities and equal rights online.
Every day we go without a federal privacy law gives Big Tech and
other companies the chance to engage in abusive and discriminatory data
practices. The time to act is now. Can you write to your lawmakers today and urge them to support the American Data Privacy and Protection Act?
The next few weeks will be absolutely critical to enshrine strong
privacy protections into law -- and your action right now will make a
major difference.
Thanks for all you do,
