Health Policy Events

This month, Health Affairs events will cover topics including remote patient monitoring, physician burnout, workforce strain, and more.

We'll also host a Professional Development event for Health Affairs Insiders to discuss the peer review process at the journal.

The centerpiece of the Health Affairs Journal Club meeting in September is, "Rapid Growth Of Remote Patient Monitoring Is Driven By A Small Number of Primary Care Providers."

In the article the authors find that 0.1 percent of providers accounted for 69.0 percent of all general remote patient monitoring claims.

On September 15, please join authors Mitchell Tang and Ateev Mehrotra of Harvard University for a detailed discussion of the paper’s data, methods, and policy conclusions. Health Affairs Senior Editor Jessica Bylander will host.

Date: Thursday, September 15, 2022
Time: 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Eastern
Access: Health Affairs Insiders

Trusted peer reviewers are the backbone of scholarly journals like Health Affairs.

On September 20, Health Affairs Executive Editor Don Metz will discuss the qualities we seek in reviewers, what is asked of those who agree to contribute, issues that arise in the review process, and the benefits of reviewing not only for your personal professional growth, but the future of scholarly publishing.

Health Affairs Executive Publisher Jane-Hiebert White will host.

Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2022
Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Eastern
Access: Health Affairs Insiders

In 2016, in partnership with the Physicians Foundation, Health Affairs launched the Practice of Medicine article series focusing on important health policy issues affecting physicians.

The effort has produced a comprehensive collection of policy research in the field.

On Thursday, September 22, Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil will host an online forum examining "Physician Burnout, Workforce Strain, and Lessons from COVID-19," focusing on recent work featured in the Practice of Medicine series and broader issues confronting medical professionals.

The event will take place just a week after National Physician Suicide Awareness Day (September 17).
On Friday, September 23, you are invited to join Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil for the next installment of our Policy Spotlight series, featuring Jonathan Blum, the Principal Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

In this dual role, he oversees CMS’s program policy planning and implementation and day-to-day operations of the entire agency.

Mr. Blum has more than 25 years of public and private-sector experience working in health care policy and administration.

He was an Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, a professional staff member at the Senate Finance Committee, a program analyst at the Office of Management and Budget, and has worked as a strategy and management consultant.

Earlier at HHS, he was the Deputy Administrator and Director of the Center of Medicare, leading the agency’s Medicare payment and delivery reform strategies and the policy and program management of the Medicare program.

Date: Friday, September 23, 2022

Coming In October:
Disability And Health

More than thirty years after the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, people with disabilities continue to face inequities in the health care system with respect to access and outcomes. Disparities in education, employment, housing, and transportation are also barriers to achieving health equity.

The October 2022 issue of Health Affairs provides a comprehensive, scholarly look at the relationship between disability and health. We expect it to help shape the agenda for research and policy for many years to come.

You are invited to join us for a month full of events highlighting this important work. Please save the date for the events below, and stay tuned for additional announcements about our programming.
