Pakistan has been hit with catastrophic, monsoon-like flooding strong enough to create a massive inland lake this summer, affecting an estimated 33 million Pakistanis. In addition to more than 1,000 fatalities, at least half a million houses have been destroyed, 700,000 heads of livestock have been lost, and 3.6 million acres of crops have been wiped out — this is a crisis of epic proportions.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that "millions are homeless, schools and health facilities have been destroyed, livelihoods are shattered, critical infrastructure wiped out, and people's hopes and dreams have washed away.” A third of the country is under water, according to Pakistan’s climate change minister. This is the heaviest monsoon recorded in the country since devastating flooding in 2010 that took 2,000 lives.
The catastrophic flooding in Pakistan is an all-too-predictable consequence of unmitigated, human-caused climate change. The nation of 242 million has one of the lowest emission outputs in the world, yet suffers some of the worst effects of climate change on earth.
