A year ago today, Texas forever changed the national abortion landscape.
One law — S.B. 8 — banned abortion at just six weeks of pregnancy, and allowed private citizens to sue people who provide abortions or help others access abortion after that point.
Because of S.B. 8, Planned Parenthood patients from a Texas zip code had to travel more than 300 miles farther, on average, to access abortion care than those who sought care in the months before the ban took effect.
Over the past year, this community has shared heartbreak and rage. When S.B 8 went into effect, the Planned Parenthood community responded immediately.
We've also been driven to take action, to stand together as a movement like never before. To date,
emergency access funding has supported more than 3,000 patients to travel for care since S.B. 8 cut off most abortion access in Texas.
When the Supreme Court overturned
Roe v. Wade in June, many states started putting abortion bans into place. State lawmakers have been given the green light to pursue increasingly restrictive, dangerous, and harmful abortion bans.
Just last week, abortion trigger bans went into effect in three states — Idaho, Tennessee, and Texas — banning abortion with few exceptions. This brings the total number of states with abortion bans being enforced to 16. Currently, one in three American women live in states with these bans.
But what the Planned Parenthood community has achieved in the year since S.B. 8 passed and forever changed the landscape of abortion access is nothing short of inspiring and speaks to the very essence of our movement.
We made history at rallies in cities throughout the country. We gave voice to our anger, power, and fury. Most importantly, we have worked every single day to help patients overcome barriers and burdens so that they can access care.
Thank you for bringing your strength and your courage to this movement. Thank you for always showing up for patients and providers, no matter what.
As we mark this painful anniversary and look ahead to the work to come, we're counting on your continued commitment.
You can help by making a special contribution to Planned Parenthood today, so that we can continue to educate people about sexual and reproductive health, ensure patients can access care at Planned Parenthood health centers, and do everything we can to restore and protect abortion access in every community around the country.
We couldn't do this without you.
Thank you for everything,
— Planned Parenthood
